The DOL fiduciary rule created a seismic shift in the financial services industry. While reactions among industry participants have been mostly negative, there are some genuinely positive implications of the DOL rule, irrespective of its ultimate scope. While uncertainty today is palpable, the rule has unleashed forces that will significantly transform the industry. One outcome of uncertainty is an unintended but massive gift to the business of income distribution planning. Insurers and distribution organizations have a major stake in exploiting this opportunity, but doing so takes newtools, insights and strategies.
