Pooled Employer Plans (PEPs) represent a new construct in 401(k) plans, enabling multiple unrelated employers to “join" a PEP and offload much liability and responsibility of plan sponsorship to a Pooled Plan Provider (PPP). Originally proposed as an attempt to help close the “coverage gap" in workplace retirement investing, these plans are thought to be of special appeal to smaller employers, who may not even have a DC plan currently in place.
