WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 22, 2010 — Latin American countries’ economies - not hit as hard as many other parts of the world - are rebounding from the financial crisis faster than expected, according to Robert Kerzner, president and CEO of LIMRA, LOMA and LL Global during his remarks at the 2010 Latin American Conference.
“Over the last few years, the countries in Latin America have undertaken sound economic policies, which have helped bolster their rapid recovery,” said Kerzner. “This resilience was also felt within the financial services industry, where we saw companies taking steps to expand distribution, strengthen their financial positions and better supervise their producers. And as a result, we are seeing a stronger, more robust industry in this region.”
The theme of the two-day meeting is "Re-Constructing the Future: Ethics and Responsibilities in Leadership,” focusing on the importance of strong business ethics and how it can impact a company’s ability to grow and succeed in this new, more regulated business environment.
The two-day conference featured many illustrious speakers, including Gary “Doc” Huffman, vice chairman and CEO of Ohio National Financial Services. Huffman shared the Ohio National’s successful 20-year history and described how maintaining strong ethical standards help advance the company’s business strategy. A senior executive panel, led by Javier Campo, managing director of Nación Seguros de Vida S.A., examined the repercussions of unethical behavior and how it can become the source of crime in many countries.
The closing keynote speaker, Carlitos Páez shared his experience as one of the 16 survivors who spent 72 days in the Andes and is known as the “man with an iron will.” During his presentation, Páez inspired and motivated the attendees to seek the untapped resources within themselves to overcome the challenges they face.
LIMRA’s annual Latin American Conference typically draws more than 200 top executives from LIMRA member companies operating in Latin America.
