ATLANTA, Sept. 25, 2024 — A century ago, LOMA opened its doors for the first time in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Originally the Life Office Management Association, the organization was founded to help educate the growing number of home-office industry professionals about operations and financial business best practices, emerging industry trends and innovation in insurance products.

In 1929, LOMA’s membership expanded throughout North America as life insurance companies recognized the need for an industry-specific educational program. In 1932, LOMA launched its Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation. This program helps industry employees understand the fundamentals of insurance products and operations, strengthens business and financial acumen, and helps rising talent understand the quantitative and financial concepts they need to help lead in their organizations.

In 1937, six industry professionals were the first to attain their FLMI designations. By 2015, LOMA had issued 100,000 FLMI designations to professionals across 87 countries. Since then, LOMA has continued to educate thousands of industry professionals annually, raising the level of expertise globally, and fulfilling its mission to its members.

“This is an incredible milestone for us,” said David Levenson, president and CEO, LIMRA and LOMA. “We take a lot of pride in the role we’ve played and continue to play as the premier professional development organization supporting the insurance industry.”

Today, LOMA continues to lead and innovate with its approaches toward industry learning. LOMA’s award-winning Industry Advantage, launched earlier this year, is an enterprise-wide program that gives employees unlimited access to a deep and broad library of bite-sized content with topics focused on life insurance, annuities, and workplace benefits. It is a proven platform to encourage employee engagement, improve productivity and close the knowledge gap for professionals new to the industry.

In 2008, LIMRA and LOMA merged to bring greater value to their members and the broader financial services industry. Leveraging their unique individual strengths and capabilities over the past 16 years, the two organizations have been able come together to identify new opportunities to better serve their collective members.

LOMA began its journey with 82 U.S. life insurance companies in 1924 and has expanded to serve more than 700 companies worldwide. LOMA is honored to continue to support its members and the industry.
